What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

I’m not your typical American. Sports aren’t my thing, except for watching Football and Hockey. Baseball and Dirt Track Racing are okay too. But my favorite is Gravel Biking.

Wait! What? Gravel Biking. Is that even a sport?

I know what you’re thinking. Gravel Biking is just a recreational activity, a hobby. It’s not really a sport, right? Well, let me take you on a trail ride and share my thoughts. And yes, I’ll argue it’s a sport, in some aspects.

In short, I LOVE Gravel Biking. Check out my previous blog post, One Habit that Brings Me Joy to read more. But let me summarize for you.

Gravel Biking is like the cool rebel cousin of regular biking. First off, it’s all about those bumpy, rocky paths that would make a city bike cry. You’re out there, pedaling away on trails that look like they’ve been chewed up by a giant monster truck.

Now, imagine this: you’re bouncing along, your teeth are rattling, and you’re thinking, “Is this fun or am I just shaking my brain loose?” But then, boom! You hit a smooth patch and feel like a superhero for about five seconds before the next round of “nature’s massage” starts.

And the best part? You get to see places that are so hidden, even squirrels are like, “Whoa, how’d you find my secret nut stash?” Plus, you’re getting a workout that’s sneakier than a cat burglar. Your legs are burning, but you’re too distracted by not face-planting to notice.

Gravel Biking and Wellness

There are numerous health benefits to Gravel Biking also. At least in my experience. It’s like the Wild West of cycling. First off, imagine your bike is a superhero—it can go on roads, dirt paths, and even some pretty gnarly rocky bits. It’s not picky.

You’re zooming down a trail, wind in your hair, and suddenly—bam!—you hit a patch of gravel. But hey, no sweat! Your trusty gravel bike eats those pebbles for breakfast. And the best part? You get to see nature’s secret hideouts, places where regular bikes fear to tread.

Gravel biking isn’t just about being a daredevil; it’s also a sneaky way to boost your wellness. Think about it—you’re getting a killer workout, clearing your mind, and soaking up vitamin D all at once. Plus, you’re building up those leg muscles to superhero levels.

And let’s be real, nothing beats the feeling of conquering a tough trail. It’s like winning a medal in the “I didn’t think I could do that” Olympics. So, grab your helmet, embrace the bumps, and get ready to tell some epic “that one time on my gravel bike” stories.

Does ‘Gravel’ Biking Count as a Sport?

Gravel Racing is growing in popularity. Every year, my Facebook feed and inbox are more and more flooded with competitions and events. They require endurance, intense training, planning, and too, the right equipment.

Bike Radar will tell you these races are not for the faint of heart. They’re long, they’re tough, and they’ll test your willpower like a pop quiz on Monday morning. But here’s the kicker: they’re also ridiculously fun. You’re out there, surrounded by nature, pushing pedals with a bunch of other folks who think getting dusty is a good time.

Now, let’s talk about the courses. Oh boy, they can be wild! Some routes are so remote, you half expect a tumbleweed to roll past you, cowboy-style. And the terrain? It’s like the earth had a mood swing—smooth one minute, then throwing rocks and roots at you the next.

Gravel racing is like a buffet of challenges. You’ve got climbs that make your legs scream, descents that get your heart racing, and flat stretches where you can catch your breath—if you’re lucky. Plus, the weather can go from sunny to stormy faster than you can say “Where’s my rain jacket?”

Despite all this, gravel racers are a cheerful bunch. Maybe it’s the endorphins, or maybe it’s the mud splatters that make everyone look like they’ve been in a chocolate-throwing contest. Either way, there’s a sense of camaraderie that’s as thick as the dust on your water bottle.

In the end, whether you cross the finish line first or just happy to finish, you’ll have stories to tell. Like that time you almost wiped out on a sneaky patch of loose gravel, or how you powered up a hill like the Flash (even if it felt more like a snail).

Gravel racing isn’t just a sport; it’s an adventure on wheels. So grab your bike, find a race, and get ready to laugh in the face of a little dirt and sweat. Because when it comes down to it, isn’t that what life’s all about?

Gravel Culture Pride

Speaking of Gravel Culture, what excites me the most is the sport is gaining serious traction in the news. The Gravel Community is becoming more inclusive with every ride. Emma writes:

We want Gravel Union to be a celebration of everything that’s good about gravel riding and that includes being welcoming to everyone and non-discriminatory.

Once upon a time, in the land of gravel cycling, there was a rainbow explosion! Seriously, it was like unicorns and bikes had a party. The Gravel Union decided that everyone, and I mean everyone, should feel welcome on two wheels. So, they waved their magic wand and poof! – inclusivity became their middle name. Read more here.

Now, let’s talk about the LGBTQ+ community. They were not just invited to the party; they got VIP passes! The Gravel Union made sure to shout from the rooftops: “Hey, you’re awesome, and your bike is cool!” It didn’t matter who you loved or how you identified; if you could pedal, you were in.

They didn’t just talk the talk; they pedaled the pedal. They teamed up with Pride groups, because, well, teamwork makes the dream work. Together, they created events where everyone could ride proudly, rainbows and all.

And the best part? This was a full-on commitment to keep the wheels turning for diversity. Every race, every ride, every dusty trail was a chance to show the world that gravel cycling is for you. For everyone.

Being out there and grinding gears, you’re part of a bigger picture. A colorful picture that includes every shade under the sun.

I See the Finish Line

Thanks for another ride my friends. Let’s embrace the fact that Gravel Biking is a sport. It may not fit our traditional mold, but it has its unique challenges. From the bumpy trails that make your teeth rattle to all of the hidden gems of nature you discover along the way. Gravel Biking offers a one-of-a-kind experience you’ll never forget.

And those health benefits – a killer workout, a clear mind, and a dose of vitamin D all in one ride. Whether you’re on a leisurely trail ride or participating in a gravel race, there’s a sense of camaraderie and adventure that is hard to find anywhere else. Where everyone is welcome to pedal their way to happiness.

Grab your helmet, embrace the bumps, and get ready for an epic journey on two wheels. Because when it comes down to it, Gravel Biking is not just a sport, it’s an extraordinary adventure that brings joy to all who dare to ride. Need some gear?
