Cracking the Code of Outdoor Safety
Ever felt like the odd one out in a sea of outdoor enthusiasts? You’re not alone. Many in the LGBTQIA+ community echo the sentiment: “I don’t feel safe in today’s outdoor spaces alone.”
Outdoor culture is still very geared toward predominantly white, cisgender, heterosexual people

This feeling is unfortunately all too common, as numerous individuals within our community share similar experiences and apprehensions when it comes to exploring the great outdoors. There are valid concerns about safety, acceptance, and comfort that cannot be overlooked.
But fear not, fellow adventurers! You’re not alone. Indeed, there’s a wave of solidarity and camaraderie that runs deep through our community. A support system that’s ready to extend its hand to ensure you never truly feel isolated. Or exposed to the elements of intolerance.
We recognize the importance of embracing who we are while nourishing our love for nature and discovery.
But I have a solution. A solution that revolves around creating inclusive groups, fostering safe environments, and advocating for equal opportunities to enjoy and engage with nature. By banding together and building networks of trust and understanding, we can carve out spaces in the outdoor world where everyone feels welcome, valued, and secure.
So lace up your boots, pack your bag with confidence, and get ready to embark on adventures surrounded by those who champion diversity and inclusion every step of the way.
The Lone Ranger Syndrome
Venturing alone into the great expanse of the wilderness can sometimes feel as dull and monotonous as sitting there, eyes glazed over, observing the slow and uneventful process of watching paint dry on a wall.
Believe me when I tell you, I’ve trodden that path before, taken those solitary steps, and lived to narrate the tales. My Gravel Biking for example. As awesome as I think it is, the first hour or so, my wife is not a fan of.
My experiences are drawn from various personal adventures where I’ve found myself equipped with little more than the bare essentials, one of which invariably includes a trusty bottle of mosquito repellent—my loyal companion in the face of relentless insect adversaries.
It’s these ventures into the unknown, armed with not much else but my wits and will, where I have come to understand the fine line between a thrilling escapade and an exercise in tedium akin to time standing still.
The “Be Safe” Buddy System
Discovering the magical essence that can transform a simple outdoor venture into a truly delightful experience is much simpler than one might expect. It boils down to one golden rule: be safe and never venture into the great outdoors by yourself.
When you’re planning your next outdoor adventure, take a moment to invite someone along for the ride. Reach out to a friend who shares your zest for nature. And connect with a partner who appreciates the tranquil moments under the sky.
Or maybe even consider bringing along a family member who’s been yearning for some quality time. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
And let’s not forget about our quirkier companions – if your ideal partner in crime happens to be a sentient plant because that’s what tickles your fancy, then by all means, embrace it!
The fact of the matter is, that camaraderie not only brings joy and shared memories, but it also creates a safety net. When you’re with someone else, you have someone to rely on should unexpected situations arise.
Also, someone to laugh with as you stumble over a hidden tree root. And someone to share in the collective awe of a surprise wildlife sighting.
In essence, engaging with others as you immerse yourself in the marvels of nature doesn’t just promise emotional satisfaction; it very well could be a prudent choice that helps you be safe.
Remember, whether you’re meandering through lush forests, traversing rugged terrains, or picnicking in a sun-dappled meadow. The secret sauce to achieving outdoor bliss isn’t about the latest gear or finding the most secluded spot.
It’s about the bonds you forge and the company you keep while soaking in the vast, open-air grandeur of our world.
The Furry Factor: Finding a Four-Legged Friend
Now, imagine this scenario in more vivid detail.
You’re ambling along a dappled forest path. The sun peeking through the lush canopy overhead. Casting a kaleidoscope of light and shadow that dances around your feet. The air is fresh and carries with it the distinct musky scent of earth mingled with the fragrance of wildflowers and pines.
The gentle rustling of leaves whispers serenely as the breeze flutters through the treetops. Punctuated by the occasional bird song that resonates in the tranquil air. You are at peace. A contented smile graces your lips as you breathe deeply. Savoring the untamed beauty of nature that surrounds you.
Your faithful furry friend, ears perked up and nose twitching with every exciting new scent, trots happily alongside you. Their presence adds an element of joyful companionship to your woodland adventure. Their wagging tail epitomizes the carefree spirit of the day.
Every once in a while, they bound off the path, chasing after a squirrel or investigating an intriguing hollow. But they always return to your side. And their eyes shining with unspoken stories of their mini escapades.
Introducing Your “Be Safe” Furry Sidekick
