What Activities Do I Lose Myself In? Bike Trails, Check ā …But what gets me lost for hours and hours, sometimes days, is Gravel Biking. Gravel Biking is one of my top 5 Outdoor Activities. And here in the Midwest, there are no shortages of Gravel Roads to lose myself on.
Getting Lost in the Thrill of Gravel Biking
Local Bike Trails
Okay, so maybe it’s not like traditional bike trails. But there’s something about the crunch of gravel beneath my tires. he wind in my hair and the open road stretching endlessly before me that sets my soul on fire. It’s like therapy on two wheels.

When I saddle up and hit the “gravel” bike trails, I’m not just embarking on a ride; I’m diving headfirst into an adventure, losing myself in the rhythm of my pedals and the beauty of the great outdoors.
And the constant hills. Up and down again. My thighs burning. The sweat dripping into my eyes. Trying to remember to keep my mouth closed. My face is covered in dust and a mountain of muddy snot boogies building up in my nose. A whole different experience than “snot-cycles” from winter cycling.
Oh, what an adventure, Gravel Biking is. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything so grand.
Discovering Hidden Gems
Whenever the wanderlust kicks in and my feet start to itch for the feel of pedals beneath them, “Gravel biking near me” is invariably the phrase that I excitedly type into my Google search bar. It’s like a magic incantation that unlocks a world brimming with untold adventure and pristine landscapes.
All just waiting to be traversed. And let me tell you, the treasure trove of hidden gems that it reveals never disappoints, not even in the slightest.
From winding paths that weave their way through towering corn fields and sweet-smelling pig farms. From picturesque countryside roads bordered by fields of wildflowers that dance gently in the breeze. Every option presents a feast for the senses.
Yes, Mountain Bike Trails Exist in Nebraska

Or consider the local mountain bike trails not far from my house. Not ideal for a Gravel Bike, but so much fun! And sketchy. Each jump takes me dangerously close to either breaking my bike or my collarbone.
There’s always a new route to explore. Each one offers its unique challenges and charms. With every journey, there’s a new vista to behold.
Perhaps a serene lake reflecting the sky like a polished mirror. Or a rolling hillside dotted with cows grazing peacefully. The sheer variety ensures that the thrill of discovery is a constant companion on these gravel-grinding excursions.
So whether I’m looking for a leisurely ride to clear my mind. Or an adrenaline-filled expedition to test my endurance. I know that the answer lies just a few pedal strokes away.
Because in the kingdom of gravel biking, the quest for the next great trail is a journey that never truly endsāit only gets more exciting with every adventure beckoning on the horizon.
Embracing the Unknown
But what I love most about gravel biking is the element of unpredictability. Unlike paved roads where every turn is familiar, gravel trails are a wild frontier waiting to be conquered. You never know what’s around the next bend.
Last summer I took a short. Um, well, my wife would tell you it wasn’t so short. Let’s call it a day adventure. I was feeling so good. I was fueled up on carbs, the sun was shining, and the blue sky was all I could see for miles.
Had I paid more attention to the loose gravel I was approaching instead of the sky, I probably wouldn’t have almost lost my shit on that turn!
Places like Colorado are incredible. But don’t take for granted the scenery of the Midwest. You’ll find serene lakes, quaint little creeks, or even a family of deer grazing in a sun-dappled meadow. It’s this sense of adventure and discovery that keeps me coming back for more. Eager to lose myself in the great unknown.
A Symphony of Sights and Sounds
In my leisure time of “grinding the gravel” they say, I’m treated to a symphony of sights and sounds that feed my soul. The chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves, the babbling of brooks. It’s nature’s soundtrack. And I can’t help but feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself.
With every mile, I feel more alive and more connected to the world around me. My kids tease me all the time that I need hearing aids. Maybe I do. But when I’m out on the country roads, I feel like I can hear everything. Like all of my senses are awakened.
Getting Lost on the Bike Trails
They say time flies when you’re having fun, and nowhere is that more true than on the bike trails. Hours slip by like minutes as I lose myself in the moment. The worries of everyday life melt away with each pedal stroke.
It’s a feeling of pure freedom, of being completely and utterly present in the here and now. That is until you realize you truly are lost! My wife and I were on an adventure not long ago on one of our familiar local bike trails. And it wasn’t too familiar all of a sudden.
Getting a later start to the day of biking, we lost track of time a bit. But we were feeling really good and we hadn’t been out for a while. After we reached our stopping point, we both agreed we were going to push it just a little further this time.
Once we reached the end of the local trail and stopped for a bit to take in the surroundings that we’d never seen before it was time to turn back. Instead now it had gotten dark. And we had about a 20-mile ride back home yet. Better yet, yours truly left his bike lights at home.
Losing myself in my favorite activity had a whole new meaning that day. Well, night.
