5 To-Do’s for LGBTQIA+ Gravel Biking Newbies: But Really We Mean for Everyone!

Is the gravel world welcoming to the LGBTQIA+ community? Is cycling even a sport for that matter? Can queers gravel? These are common questions I hear and read about often. And it is my great pleasure to shout a loud, YES! I’ve personally have never experienced so much acceptance in my life outside of the gravel biking world. So let me share why you need this To-Do List!

Hey there, fantastic humans! If you’ve stumbled across my musings on the joys of gravel biking and thought, “Hmm, could this be the glittery biking path for me?” then you’re in luck.

As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and a gravel biking aficionado, I’m here to guide you through the rainbow road of getting into gravel biking. So, buckle up (or should I say, strap on your helmet).

And let’s dive into this with the enthusiasm of a kid in a candy store — or in our case, a queer in a bike shop!

Find Your Gravel Biking Community Vibe

First things first, let’s find our tribe! I’m not as bold as you might think I am. I have my extraverted moments but for the most part, I’m generally reserved. Get me into a bike store, or at any type of outdoors event though. And I’m like Ralphie, gazing at the beauty of a Red Rider BB gun.

So where do you find your peeps? Simple. Hop on that ‘ol Google Search and type in “bicycle group near me” or dive into the wonderful world of “community bikes.” Or better yet, Facebook! On social media, you’ll also be able to see if there’s others in your circle already into the gravel bikes vibe.

There’s something special about doing outdoorsy stuff like cycling together that makes me feel safe. Whether it’s bike tours, races, or just a leisurely bike ride near me. Getting involved with a group can make the experience richer. Especially when it’s with folks who share your identity and interests.

Choose Your Gravel Biking Companion Wisely

I hopped on a ride with a friend once and I never hurt so bad after. This guy, man, he’ll put in a hundred miles on most days. Yea! You read that right. Every. Single. Day. And rest days? He still rides, but only 40 or 60 miles. It’s like Captain America, “I could do this all day.”

But let’s talk about the star of the show: your bike. If you’re like me, your heart might race at the thought of bike shopping. When considering your options, think about what appeals to you.

Is it the rugged charm of the Unbound Gravel races or the serene beauty of a mountain bike trail? In reality, as beautiful as a mountain bike trail is, and if you’re like me, you’re not looking at the scenery. All you can hope for is to not break your tailbone. Or your bike.

My choice; Felix, my Giant Revolt 2. I’ve taken Felix on thousands of miles of pure bliss and adventure. And not just gravel either. Even with the wider tires, Felix glides along my local bike trails smooth and fast. Even the damn squirrels try to jump on for a ride. I tell you, those stupid, scatter brained animals. I swear, one of them is gonna kill me someday.

But maybe you’re looking for something more budget-friendly. Just getting started, you don’t need to dump a wad of cash. Equally capable to my mid-level, Revolt, something like the Tommaso Sentiero* would be an excellent start.

And if you’re dreaming big, why not eye a full Carbon Frame beauty like the X-Gravel Bike from ICAN*? As soon as my porcelain pink piggy is full of coins, I’m definitely jumping on the Carbon Frame band wagon. Just remember, it’s about finding a bike that matches your adventure spirit (and budget).

Are you looking for some budget friendly options? Here’s a few of our top picks you can find on Amazon* right now!

The List

1. Set Your Gravel Biking Budget

(But Be Ready to Blow It)

Talking about budgets is as thrilling as discussing the different types of tire tread, but it’s necessary. Decide how much you’re willing to spend on this new love affair.

Whether you’re scrimping, saving, or ready to splurge, there’s something for every wallet size. Just know, like any passionate hobby, it’s easy to go overboard. Need a place to start? I’ve got you covered right here*.

One minute you’re budgeting for a bike, and the next, you’re justifying why you absolutely need those premium pedals (spoiler: because they’re awesome).

2. Gear Up for Safety and Flair

Safety first, darlings! But who says safety can’t be stylish? Invest in a good helmet, lights, and reflective gear. Then, jazz it up. Stickers, patterns, bright colors. Make your gear a statement piece. It’s not just about being seen; it’s about being seen and fabulous.

But let me say it again. Get a freakin’ light. It’s no fun when you realize you mis-judged your time and distance. And then all of a sudden you realize you got 20-miles left to go, it’s dark, and there’s trees blocking every glimmer of light possible.

👆 Yup… I’ve done that!

3. Gravel Biking Maintenance

Nothing says independence like patching up your own tire or adjusting your seat height without a meltdown. Understanding the basics of bike maintenance can save you time, money. And the embarrassment of being stranded with a bike issue you can’t fix.

YouTube is your friend here. And my suggestion, @ParkTool or @RJTheBikeGuy. Both of these channels will leave your head full of knowledge and you won’t feel stupid after. Humor, sarcasm, and wisdom. All rolled into one… well, actually they have thousands of videos, but you get the point.

4. Plan Your First Adventure

Now, for the fun part — planning your first gravel ride. Start small with a biking trail near you or go big and bike across America (hey, we can dream, right?). I like Apps. My favorite for off the norm trails is Ride With GPS. Lincoln, NE is home to Gravel Worlds. And we’ve got a ton of routes saved as “Gravel Medicine“. I’m sure you’ve got some around you too.

Whatever you choose, make it memorable. Pack a picnic, bring friends, or just enjoy the solitude and scenery. The world is your oyster, and you’re about to bike across it.

5. Connect and Share

Last but not least, share your journey. Whether it’s a triumphant Instagram post. A heartfelt blog entry. Or just chatting with your new cycling pals. Sharing your experiences can inspire others. You never know who might read your story and think, “If they can do it, so can I.”

So there you have it, my fabulous gravel biking to-do list for the queer and questioning, the bold and beautiful, the LGBTQIA+ community, and beyond. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. So enjoy every pedal, every hill, and every breathtaking view. Happy biking, everyone!
